The charm of a historic residence
The Garzia building is among the tree historic ones in Maglie, closing off Aldo Moro Square, towering on the narrow side, in the heart of downtown, a stone’s throw away from the best bars restaurants and shops and City Hall.
The building was constructed between the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the following one; it is entirely made of Lecce stone and embellished with a characteristic, small, rounded tower that adorns the south-west corner of the façade.
It was, for a long time, the domicile of the Garzia family, then it housed the City Club for nearly a century.
In the rooms on the ground floor, the family farm, now Margottini, was run, since the foundations of the building were laid.
The main floor is entirely dedicated to the reception. It may be reached using two flights of stairs, called respectively: CIRCOLO and SALVE, (names on floor tiles).
The facility offers luxurious rooms with private bathrooms, and a spacious shared kitchen and living room. Alternatively, there are habitable apartments capable of housing four to six people; they all have independent entryways, each one immersed in the atmosphere of the ancient dwelling.
Both the rooms and apartments have each their style, personality, and color, and every new piece of furniture has been matched with those acquired over time—a tribute to family history.
The luminous and quiet courtyards on the ground floor make the guest feel warmly welcomed, with everpresent references to the recent past of the place as a family farm. Also, on the ground floor, there are the rooms in which one may have breakfast in the warm season, or host events or work out and cooler, more ensconced rooms in which to enjoy tea or drinks.
The choice to bet big on renewables has proven pivotal; the building is, in fact, equipped with photovoltaic cells, which provide both heating and electricity and with a rainwater recovery plant.
Maglie, in the heart of Salento, offers a view of the region, which is simultaneously ancient and intimate, not yet spoiled by mass tourism.
It is the perfect destination for those seeking both culture and relax, and also an ideal jumping-off point to set off for Gallipoli, Otranto, Lecce, and many other sights which make this corner of Puglia so unique.
